Federal Government Invest $1.5 Million
To Extend Services To New
Collingwood Industrial Park
The Honourable Helena Guergis, P.C., M.P. for Simcoe-Grey was in Collingwood on Thursday September 10th to present a cheque in the amount of $1,570,480 to the Town of Collingwood to fund the expansion of the municipal sewer and water services to the town's new industrial subdivision.
"Under the leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, our government has committed to act quickly to provide the specialized support that our communities need during these uncertain economic times. Through our Economic Action Plan, we are taking action to stimulate the economy, and create jobs in communities like Collingwood" said Guergis. "The funding for this project is one of 90 projects that we are announcing that total a federal investment of up to $102 million dollars. I am pleased to deliver this funding and I look forward to continue working with Mayor Carrier and our municipal leaders on more ways to create jobs and strengthen our local economy" Guergis added.
Collingwood Mayor Chris Carrier said that he was ecstatic with the funding announcement. "This is another good day for Collingwood" he said. The Community Adjustment Fund was brought to our attention by M.P. Helna Guergis. The town went through the application process and thank goodness that it did receive approval" Carrier said.
Recently, Guergis brought Minister Tony Clement to the area to listen first hand to Collingwood's major employers and to hear their concerns about "Buy American" policies. Mayor Carrier said that the Town of Collingwood continues to be a major employer for the region, importing about 37% of the labour force.
"This 1.5 million dollars will support the decisions of Collingwood Council in making the necessary strategic investments in infrastructure to create new job growth opportunities such as the Sanford Fleming Industrial Park and this new investment by DiPoce Management and Eden Oak Investments' 150 acre business/industrial park.
The Collingwood funding announcement is a part of the up to $102 million investment made by the Federal Government through the Community Adjustment Fund for 2009-2010, announced on August 27, 2009 by the Honourable Gary Goodyear, newly appointed Minister of State for the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario. M.P. Guergis said that it is the government's intention to support a total of 90 projects in communities across Southern Ontario that are struggling with the effects of the global economic downtown. Guergis said that she is very pleased that four applications in Simcoe-Grey were approved. She said the fact that this money will help communities in this riding is very important for continued economic growth in the region.
