Business Retention and Expansion Study for Collingwood's Industrial/Employment Sector

Introduction

Objectives of the Business Retention and Expansion Study

The major objectives of the study are to:

1. Conduct personal interviews with Chief Executive Officers of the businesses.

2. Develop a data base profile of businesses in the community (economic indicators).

3. Gain an understanding of the business community’s view of the local economy.

4. Determine companies' business plans for the future (i.e., expansion and/or relocation), and thereby set up an early warning system for local action.

5. Acquaint business leaders with assistance available through various municipally driven economic development programs.

6. Improve the communications bridge between local government and the business community.

7. Identify specific concerns and problems of the local businesses and provide solutions to those problems in a swift and effective way.

An overall objective of the Business Retention and Expansion Project is related to the process itself. By conducting the study, business executives are provided an opportunity to have their opinions heard and passed directly onto municipal representatives in a highly confidential manner. It is a positive step for local government toward understanding the implications of their policies for this very important segment of the community. The underlying goal is to be responsive to business needs.

In order to accomplish these objectives the BR+E Study uses an in-depth survey instrument to collect information from Chief Executive Officers, or their designates on the local business climate.
